If an Italian heard me call this “tiramisu,” they probably wouldn’t approve. And to be fair… they’d be right. This isn’t tiramisu. But the inspiration is definitely there.
I live in Bagheria, near Palermo, just a short walk from a Lidl. They sell an incredibly creamy Greek yogurt—mild in flavor, not sour at all, and almost velvety in texture. I try to eat a bit of yogurt every day, and I’ve noticed it really benefits my health (but I won’t bore you with that here 😝).
{A little update: these days I often make my own Greek-style yogurt instead of buying it. It's surprisingly easy, and during the warm Sicilian summer I don't even need a yogurt maker. I wrote a step-by-step guide if you'd like to try it yourself.}
One thing I noticed: the same Greek Lidl yogurt is available in the Netherlands, but it’s just slightly different. In Italy, it’s thicker, creamier, and milder (and yes, a bit more expensive too). That texture is what gave me the idea.
Because in a way, it resembles mascarpone—and that became the inspiration for this dessert: a lighter, quicker, more accessible version of tiramisu, with fresh fruit adding a bright, refreshing touch.
Sometimes indulgence lies in simplicity—and this is the perfect example.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
500 g Greek yogurt (at least 8% fat)
1–2 packets of vanilla sugar (optional)
8 or more ladyfingers
12–16 strawberries
3 tablespoons sugar
Instructions
Cut the strawberries into small pieces (about ½ cm). Place them in a bowl, sprinkle the sugar over them, and mix well so all pieces are coated. Cover and refrigerate.
In a separate bowl, add the Greek yogurt and mix in the vanilla sugar if desired, depending on how sweet you like it.
Break the ladyfingers into small pieces (about 1–2 cm) and stir them into the yogurt. Cover and refrigerate this mixture as well.
Let both bowls rest for at least an hour.
During this time, something wonderful happens: the ladyfingers absorb the yogurt and become deliciously soft. At the same time, some of the sugar from the cookies blends into the yogurt, giving it a gentle sweetness. Meanwhile, the strawberries release their juices and turn into a sweet, syrupy mixture.
Take four nice glasses. Divide the yogurt mixture between them, then spoon the strawberries and their juices on top.
And that’s it—ready to serve.
Feel free to experiment with the proportions and ingredients until you find your perfect version. Personally, I often skip the vanilla sugar—I’m not much of a sweet tooth, and I find the subtle sweetness from the ladyfingers more than enough.
But if you prefer a sweeter dessert, the vanilla sugar brings it just a little closer to that classic tiramisu experience.
