How Scent Can Instantly Lift Your Mood Through Memory

A few days ago, in the early morning, I was wandering through Bagheria, enjoying the sunlight sparkling through the narrow streets. At last, spring has arrived. Even in Sicily, winter lasted far too long this year — it has been raining for months.
Walking through those sunlit streets, I was suddenly struck by a scent. A scent that unexpectedly made me feel happy. It came from an open door I passed — probably a fresh cleaning product you often find in stairwells.
But whatever it exactly was, it immediately triggered something else.

It was that freshness that reminds me of early mornings in a Mediterranean spring. The day just waking up, young grass, a single buzzing insect, birds in the distance…

And suddenly I knew.

It was the scent of Fa Caribbean Lemon Shower Gel.

And more importantly: I also knew why this scent affects me so strongly.
Years ago, somewhere in my late twenties, I used it while showering during a holiday at a campsite in the south of France. Mornings filled with sunlight, simple days, everything still open and full of possibility.

That scent has stayed with me ever since.

For me, perfumes and scents work like time machines. Sometimes I catch a smell and I am suddenly pulled back into a period I thought I had forgotten.

Recently, I’ve added another such association: Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford. I bought it here in Bagheria, and for me it fits the southern, almost Arabic atmosphere of this place.

Maybe one day I should create a small box of scents, each one marking a period in my life. An archive of memories I could open whenever I want to travel back in time.

Maybe I will.

Maybe that is what makes scent so special: it doesn’t just take you back to places, but also to who you were at that time.
